SUMMARY:October 2026 TIG Meeting - Michelle Spencer - Hidden New York: Breaking Brick Walls with CRIS
LOCATION:Zoom
DESCRIPTION:October 2026 TIG Meeting - Michelle Spencer - Hidden New York: Breaking Brick Walls with CRIS\n\n10/20/26 07:00 PM EST\n - 10/20/26 09:00 PM EST\Description:\nFor the October TIG meeting, we welcom back Michelle Spencer. Her presentation will be Hidden New York: Breaking Brick Walls with CRIS.\n\nNew York’s Cultural Resource Information System (CRIS) holds more than 1.5 million pages of National and State Register nominations, yet it remains largely untapped by genealogists. For Rochester researchers, these records capture the city’s neighborhoods, industries, institutions, and families during periods of rapid growth and change.  \n\nIn this session, you’ll learn how to navigate CRIS to uncover ancestors embedded in historic properties, businesses, and communities. By using Rochester-based examples, this presentation demonstrates how CRIS records reveal occupations, migration patterns, and neighborhood context—often providing the missing evidence needed to break through stubborn research brick walls.\n\nThis meeting is free for members of the Rochester Genealogical Society. Registration will open soon.\Details:\nMichelle L. Spencer, owner of RomaMaryGrace, is a specialist in family business research, small towns, and historic preservation. With more than 30 years of experience, she has lectured at major genealogical institutions and the WWI Museum & Memorial. She has co-authored over 60 National Register of Historic Places nominations, and her work has appeared on Who Do You Think You Are? and Finding Your Roots.
